Can I Sue my birth father for child support even thought there was never a court order for support?
I'm 19 years old and I recently came into contact with my birth father for the first time ever but he's decided not to be a part of my life even though he's raising his two stepsons with his current wife. I want to sue him for child support (in the state of California). He was notified when I was born that I was his child and then had relinquished his parental rights when I was twelve so my stepdad could adopt me. My mom never took him to court to sue him for child support so he never paid a penny in my entire life. Can I take him to court and make him pay for the 12 years that he should have been giving my mom child support? His name was never on my birth certificate but rumor has it that when I was born, he actually drafted up a proposal for child support if a DNA test came up positive but my parents never went through with the DNA test in the first place. My mother just simply never talked to him again and I never heard from him. Is it possible to sue him now even though I'm over 18 and have been adopted by someone else? What resources are available for me to find out? Who can I talk to? Can I find a free consultation who would explain my next course of action?
