How do you purge air from a lifter on 2001 pontiac sunfire GT?

Engine lost oil through a bad oil sensor switch. Now the motor knocks when it reaches 2500RPM. I have been told that its just air in the lifter, I changed the oil but I guess the air doesn't purge out like they do in older model vehicles.
