How does one tell a function's concavity?

my teacher gave x + y^2 = 2, and wants us to roughly sketch it without a calculator. he says its concavity is concave left (x = -y^2 + 2), and i didn't understand how he got that by just moving around the y^2. how did he tell immediately that it was concave left?
