What is minimum time wastewater needs for nitrification in aquarium filter?

Canister filters devote a lot of media space for zeolites or ceramic which promote nitrifiying bacteria. It is a good concept, but does the wastewater stay in the filter long enough to be nitrified? At 100 gph, it doesn't give bacteria long to work.
